A flat Roman shade is a tailored, practical window treatment that controls light and provides privacy. Completely flat when lowered, this style works beautifully on its own or layered with tied-back curtains, drapery side panels, or swags.
Roman shades operate by pulling a cord that is threaded through a series of small rings on the back of the fabric. Each shade is attached to a mounting board and can be installed either inside the window frame or outside it—on or above the frame.
For guidance, please refer to the illustrations in this listing to see how to measure for an inside mount or an outside mount.

HOW TO MEASURE AND ORDER

Please follow these instructions step by step to successfully purchase the listing and receive your beautifully made shades without any delays:

STEP 1. Measure for your Roman Shades

Determine if you want your shades mount inside or outside your window frame. Refer to our illustrations for instructions or instructions below on how to measure for each option.

- INSIDE MOUNT:
Width: Measure the width of the window opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest measurement.
Height: Measure the height of the window opening from the top of the frame to the bottom. Measure on the left, middle, and right side, using the longest measurement.

- OUTSIDE MOUNT:
Width: Decide how much you want the shades to overlap the window. Add at least 1-2 inches on each side to the window width.
Height: Measure from the desired starting point (above the window) to the bottom of where you want the shades to hang. Add extra length if you want more coverage.

Always double-check your measurements! Also consider any obstructions, like window handles or locks. Write down your measurements clearly to avoid confusion when ordering.
For multiple windows, measure each one individually, as sizes can vary.
If you’re unsure about measurements, consult with a professional or the retailer for guidance.

STEP 2. Pick and get your own fabric.

Here‘s how to calculate the approximate amount of fabric:
(please note - to calculate the exact yardage, contact us prior to purchasing the fabric)

Width of the shade + 5 inches = Fabric width
Length of the shade + 15 inches = Fabric length
(For example, if you measured your window and determined that the shade should be 37" wide x 43" long, you would need a piece of fabric measuring 42" wide x 58" long.)

If your fabric has a repeat pattern, add (Pattern length x 2) to the length of the fabric, calculated using the instructions above.

If width of your fabric does not allow for wide curtains, we can sew 2 or 3 panels together to create extra wide curtain panels for you.

However, since fabrics vary in width and pattern repeats, it’s always best to confirm your requirements before purchasing fabric. We recommend sending us a message for yardage calculations—we’re always happy to help.

Visit Spoonflower.com to explore a wide selection of beautiful patterns and fabrics. If you find a fabric you love, let us know—we can order any Spoonflower product for you with a 10% discount.
Please note that the pricing in this listing applies to sewing/constructing roman shades from new, unused fabrics. If you have existing textiles (such as old curtains, bedding, or other fabric items) that you’d like repurposed into shades, please message us with the details, and we’ll provide a custom quote.
Keep in mind that some fabrics—especially natural fibers like linen and cotton—may shrink after the first wash. For best results, we recommend pre-washing your fabric before sending it to us, or calculating the size of your shades with shrinkage in mind.

We also offer a curated selection of velvet, natural linen, and cotton fabrics that are perfect for custom window treatments. Be sure to check out our shop to see our available fabrics.

LINING
- Decide if you would like to add lining (material is provided by us) - we offer cotton privacy lining and blackout. Please follow this link to add lining to your shades: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1148581226

STEP 3. Place your order.

Select the sizes you need and add the product to your shopping cart. If you need more than one shade, you will be able to update the quantity in your shopping cart.

Example: If you need a shade that is 53" wide x 96" long, select the option for 55" wide x 100" long and include your exact dimensions in the order notes.

If your shades needs to be wider or longer than the sizes offered in our listing, please contact us—we’ll be happy to help.
