How to Measure for Curtains and Valances
Choosing the right curtains can transform a room, adding elegance and style while providing privacy and light control. However, before you can enjoy the aesthetic and functional benefits of your new curtains, you need to ensure they are the perfect fit for your windows. This requires accurate measurements.
If you're unsure how to measure for curtains, don't worry! This guide will walk you through the process step-by-step.
Understanding Curtain Measurements
Before we delve into how to measure for curtains, it's important to understand what these measurements represent. Curtain dimensions typically include the width (the horizontal measurement) and drop (the vertical measurement).
The width should normally be wider than your window to allow for full coverage when the curtains are closed. The drop refers to how long your curtains will be, which can vary based on personal preference and style.
1. Measuring Curtain Width
Start by measuring the width of your window. Use a metal tape measure for accuracy and measure from one edge of the window frame to the other. If you want your curtains fully drawn back from the window during daylight hours, add an extra 15-20cm on each side of your window frame. This allows enough space for your curtains to sit comfortably without blocking light or views.
Next, consider curtain fullness - this is how gathered or bunched up your curtains will be when closed. We recommend a Fullness Ratio of 1.5 - 2 for all curtains. The higher the fullness ratio the more gathered and heavier the curtains will be. (The width of the curtain in our listings is the width of the panel before gathering.)
2. Measuring Curtain Height
The drop of your curtain depends on where you want them to end – at the sill, below the sill or floor length are common choices.
For sill length: Measure from the top of your track or pole down to 1cm above the windowsill.
For below sill length: Measure from top of track or pole down to approximately 15cm below windowsill.
For floor length: Measure from top of track or pole down to 1cm above floor level.
Remember that if you're using a curtain track, start measuring from top of track whereas if using a pole measure from underneath it.
3. Considering Curtain Styles
Different styles may require different measurements; eyelet and tab top curtains hang directly from poles so they should fall around 4cm below it whereas pencil pleat can hang either under poles with rings or directly off tracks so they should reach just above them.
-
SILL LENGTH
Gives a clean look (curtains touch the sill of the window).
-
APRON LENGTH
Gives a casual look (curtains fall 4-5 inches below the window sill).
-
FLOOR LENGTH
Gives a classic look (curtains brush the floor).
-
PUDDLE LENTH
Gives a romantic look (curtains lay on the floor)
Roman Shades
Roman shades are a timeless window treatment that combine clean lines with soft fabric textures. Whether your style leans classic, modern, or something in between, Roman shades add an elevated, custom look to any space.
One of the most popular styles is the Flat Roman Shade, known for its sleek, minimal appearance. When lowered, the shade hangs smooth and flat, showcasing the fabric’s natural texture and pattern. When raised, it stacks neatly at the top, making it perfect for modern and transitional interiors.
For a softer and more decorative look, the Relaxed Roman Shade features a gentle curve along the bottom edge, creating an effortlessly elegant drape.
The Cloud Roman Shade offers a more voluminous and graceful effect. Its soft, billowing folds create a cloud-like appearance that adds texture and movement to the window.
How to Measure for Roman Shades
Determine if you want your shades mount inside or outside your window frame. Refer to our illustrations in the instructions below on how to measure for each option. Always double-check your measurements! Also consider any obstructions, like window handles or locks. Write down your measurements clearly to avoid confusion when ordering. For multiple windows, measure each one individually, as sizes can vary.
-
INSIDE MOUNT
Width: Measure the width of the window opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest measurement.
Height: Measure the height of the window opening from the top of the frame to the bottom. Measure on the left, middle, and right side, using the longest measurement. -
OUTSIDE MOUNT
Width: Decide how much you want the shades to overlap the window. Add at least 1-2 inches on each side to the window width.
Height: Measure from the desired starting point (above the window) to the bottom of where you want the shades to hang. Add extra length if you want more coverage.
